The police photographer who documented the death scene of Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp has revealed that he can 'still taste the blood that hung in the air'.
South
African Para-olympian Pistorious fatally shot his girlfriend Steenkamp
in his Pretoria home on Valentine's Day of 2013, claiming he had
mistaken her for an intruder hiding in the bathroom.
After
getting arrested and charged with murder Pistorius was found guilty of
culpable homicide the following year after trials and is now serving a
five-year-prison sentence.
The police photographer, Morne du Toit
who was asked to document Steenkamp's death scene is now suffering from
severe post traumatic stress disorder, claiming that the death scene
still haunts him day and night.
Du Toit has refuse to go back to work since and is currently fighting the South Africa Service Pension to his entitlmement.
Three weeks after
attending the scene Du Toit sought medical treatment for PTSD and severe
depression. Two months later he applied for early retirement on the
grounds of ill-health.
In court papers seen by IOL
News, Du Toit says he has not ben able to come to back since because of
his post traumatic stress disorder cause by death scene.
The
police says he was already seeking treatment for PTSD but Du Toit said
the scene triggered his medical condition after his long-term
psychiatrist died just three days before Miss Steenkamp's death.
"I
took pictures in the toilet, the bullet holes through the toilet door
and the blood splatters in the bathroom. I went to the main bedroom and
followed the bloody trail downstairs to the front door," he said in the court papers.
"At
the front door was a pile of towels, soaked in blood. All the walls
from the main bedroom to the front door had blood splatters. The smell
of death was prominent at the front door. I still remember the scene
very clearly.
"I have continuous dreams of lying in a bath of blood. These thoughts flash through my mind… it haunts me and keeps me awake."
The South Africa Police Service are however claiming that the Du Toit took other paid work while on medical leave.
